Those looking to save on their auto insurance bills might want to consider driving cars best suited for families. An annual study by consumer advocate Insure.com reveals that owners of family vehicles—particularly two Honda models—typically get the cheapest policies.
On the other hand, sports cars and luxury automobiles are unsurprisingly the costliest to cover, according to the report.
Insure.com’s study found that the top five cars with the least expensive policies are (from the most affordable) the Honda Odyssey LX, the Honda CR-V LX, the Dodge Grand Caravan AVP, the Jeep Patriot Sport 2WD and the Jeep Wrangler Sport 4WD.
"Family vehicles, like the Honda Odyssey, are typically cheaper to insure due to the drivers being responsible people, usually parents of little ones, who drive with care," said Insure.com consumer analyst Penny Gusner.
The report noted that the average annual premium for the Honda Odyssey LX is $1,113.
Conversely, it is the Dodge GT Viper that the report identified as the car with the priciest auto insurance costs, with an average annual premium of $4,048.
The Mercedes SL65 AMG, Mercedes S600 BI-T, Mercedes S63 AMG 4Matic and Porsche Panamera S Executive ranked after the Viper in Insure.com’s study in terms of how expensive their average insurance premiums were.
"The Viper is a car you buy because you love to drive fast," Gusner explained. "The SL65 likely skews toward those seeking luxury, and that's reflected in the rates."
