Up to 1,000 consumers may have been affected by a massive title insurance scam in North Carolina, authorities say.
Ginger Cunningham, the owner of Blue Ridge Title Company in Buncombe County, N.C., has been arrested in connection with an alleged insurance scam involving up to $97 million worth of property.
Authorities allege that Cunningham sold phony title insurance policies to her customers, ultimately embezzling more than $160,000, according to
WLOS News. The North Carolina Department of Insurance is now reviewing title insurance contracts prepared by Cunningham to try to determine whether there are any more victims of the scam.
“The attorneys who have managed these closings have been excellent in identifying consumers that have been affected that came to their office for closings, and so in excess of 500 of those contracts have been identified,” the Department of Insurance’s Chet Effler told
WLOS.
Cunningham has been charged with embezzlement and obtaining property by false pretense.
